Improve Your Photography While Social Distancing

5 Ways to Improve as a Photographer While Quarantined

In this blog post, I highlight how you can improve your photography while quarantining. This time of being stuck at home can be trying and stressful, let's use it as an opportunity to grow and improve our skills as photographers.

1. Learn new ways to edit.

During this time of isolation, we have a lot of free time. Use this time to improve your editing. There are tons of free tutorials on YouTube to learn new ways to edit your photos. Even downloading Presets can be a great way to see how other photographers edit their photos.

2. Practice product or macro photography.

It doesn't take extra people or to go out to practice product photography. Just grab something and start taking photos of it! I use lights and flashes when I take pictures of products but you can get really amazing light from using a window instead!

I'll be the first to tell you, I’m not the best at macro photography but that’s mainly because I don’t practice this style of photography enough. The more you practice the better you’ll get!

3. Plan a photoshoot for after quarantine.

Now is the perfect time to start collaborating with other creatives. Everyone is stuck at home so it’s a great time to send a DM and ask to collaborate. Once you do you can spend a lot of time on Pinterest and Instagram coming up with ideas for your shoot. Just because you have to wait to do the photoshoot doesn’t mean that you have to wait to plan it.

4. Take Self-Portraits.

You don’t need anyone else for this one. Just yourself and a camera! Taking self-portraits is a great way to pass the time and improve your photography skills. It’ll make you be more thoughtful in how you set up your frame and know which settings to use. Test your creativity too with different angles or editing your photo differently!

5. Go on a hike with your camera.

Nothing beats going outside for a walk. Try to avoid super popular hiking spots but you won’t beleive how good it feels to get outside after “staying home” for a week. Bring your camera with you and try to grab some photos while your at it!
